Arimedah:

Charaka used the bark or pitch in decoctions externally for dental and oral diseases. Arimeda is one of the ingredients in Charaka Samhitaa’s Kha-diraadi Gutikaa and oil.Vaagabhatta prescribed semi-solid extract of the bark. Chakrapaanidatta made it the chief drug in Irimedadyaadi oil, which is still available over the counter and is said to be useful in sores of the mouth, swelling of gums, dental caries, spongy and bleeding gums, pyorrhoea and weak roots of teeth. The oil is to be applied with a cotton swab to the affected part.The bark is light yellowish grey to nearly white outside and light red inside. It is bitter, astringent and cooling. Its decoction (1 in 20) is used in bronchitis. The decoction together with ginger (Zin-giber officinale) is an astringent wash for the teeth and is said to be useful in bleeding gums.The powdered bark and gum are used for boils and ulcers.

Morphology:

A moderate sized tree grows up to 30 meters in height. Leaves bipinnate, 5-15 pairs of pinnate, leaflets small oblong and obtuse; flowers in large terminal tomentose panicles, in head inflorescence; fruits thin, flat, curved pods, containing 10-20 seed per pod.

Geographical distribution:

Throughout India growing wild in planes.

Therapeutic Uses:

Plant pacifies vitiated kapha, cough, inflammation, wounds, skin diseases, leukoderma, diarrhea, hemorrhages, dental caries, stomatitis and fever.
